How to change your name on Facebook

You can change your name inside Facebook settings through Accounts Center. The change goes through a review process and may be limited by a 60-day rule. You also need to follow naming rules to avoid rejection.

Where the name setting is located

Facebook stores name settings inside Accounts Center under settings. You can access it from both mobile and desktop. The layout is similar, but menu labels may shift slightly depending on updates.

You need access to your account email or phone number before making changes. Some accounts may ask for password confirmation.

Change name using mobile app

Follow these steps on your phone:

  1. Open the Facebook app
  2. Tap the menu icon
  3. Go to Settings & Privacy
  4. Select Settings
  5. Open Accounts Center
  6. Tap Personal Details
  7. Select Name
  8. Enter your new first and last name
  9. Tap Review Change
  10. Confirm with password if asked

Your new name may take a short time to appear across the platform. In some cases, it updates immediately.

Change name using desktop

If you are on a computer, use this path:

  1. Click your profile icon
  2. Go to Settings & Privacy
  3. Open Settings
  4. Select Accounts Center
  5. Click Personal Details
  6. Select Name
  7. Edit and save your new name

Desktop changes follow the same rules as mobile. The system checks your name before approval.

Name rules you must follow

Facebook uses automated checks to prevent fake or unusual names. Your change can fail if it breaks these rules.

  • Use your real name or a commonly used variation
  • Avoid symbols, numbers, or random characters
  • Do not use repeated punctuation
  • Do not include titles like "Mr" or "Dr" unless part of legal name

If your name does not follow these rules, the system may block the update or ask for ID verification.

Common limits and restrictions

Some accounts cannot change names frequently. The most common restriction is a 60-day waiting period after a change.

  • You may only change your name once every 60 days
  • Repeated changes can trigger temporary blocks
  • Some accounts require ID upload for verification

If your request is rejected, check your previous changes before trying again.

What happens after you submit the change

After submission, Facebook reviews the request. Most changes are approved quickly, but some take longer if extra checks are needed.

You may see your old name until the update finishes syncing across all services linked to your account.
